Play is an active form of learning that unites the mind, body and spirit.

Unstructured outdoor play, develops large motor skills and reduces the tension that often comes with having to achieve or needing to learn.

Our Routine

A typical morning at the Sorrento preschool is as follows:

  • Free Play — generally lasts for an hour, during which time children are free to choose from the numerous play centers ex: blocks, dramatic play, sand and water table, puzzles, easel painting, the craft table, and much more!
  • Sharing Time — The children will be sent home with their “sharing calendar” — designating their sharing days. On their sharing day, your child may bring a toy, photograph, pet or sometimes even a special family member or friend to introduce to their peers.

(Sharing and speaking in front of the other students is a huge confidence builder and most children are very excited when it is their day!)

  • Clean up time — we all work as a team to clean up the room.
  • Hand Washing
  • Snack — students bring their own small snack from home and we all sit together, have our snack and enjoy practising the “art of conversation”
  • Circle Time — The class gathers on the circle time rug where we sing songs, do finger plays, have group discussions and enjoy stories.
  • Outdoor play — Each morning ends with outside play, we have a great play area — with a huge sandbox, climber and lots of room to run and jump!

Parent Participation — FAQ

Q.) What is a parent participation preschool?

A.) In a parent participation preschool, the parents contribute to the administration of the school and spend time in the classroom (duty days) — under the direction of qualified teachers. Parents work together with the teachers to create a positive, supportive, and enriched educational environment. It is an opportunity to take part in and enjoy your child’s educational experience.

***The opportunity for your own development and education as a parent is one you should not miss — it is a very rewarding experience!

Q.)What will my child gain from being in a parent participation preschool?

  • Independence
  • Confidence
  • Social Skills
  • A chance to develop fully — all the physical and mental skills possible at this stage in their lives.
  • A stronger self image and understanding of their social realm.
  • Playmates, playmates, playmates!

Q.) How much time is involved participating in a PPP?

Creative Play is a vital necessity in the lives of healthy children.

Creative open ended art experiences — such as “pumpkin shaving” help children to think outside the box, experience textures and smells — and best of all — get messy!

Learning through Play:

Play helps children weave together all the elements of life as they experience it. It allows them to digest the world around them and make it their own. It is a means of expressing themselves and their creativity. Play is an absolutely critical part of their childhood, with creative play, children blossom and flourish; without it, they will struggle in all areas of their development.

Children who are permitted to play freely with their peers will develop skills for seeing things through another person’s point of view...cooperating, sharing and solving problems.

Sorrento Preschool's Mission Statement

At Sorrento Preschool, we are committed to providing a rich and stimulating environment that supports and enhances children's overall development, and leaves them feeling safe and valued. Education through play is our focus, as we believe that through a play based curriculum, children will thrive in all areas of their development. We honour diversity and teach acceptance through positive guidance and role modelling. Getting to know each family, helps us to understand each child and to focus on specific life-skills that they may need to feel a secure sense of belonging and confidence.

The experiences a child absorbs during his/her preschool years, forms the core foundation that they will build upon for the rest of their lives, and we strive to help build "outstanding foundations" in each and every child.
